Decor Fall 2008
Decorate like the stars
Jill Ellis-Worthington

I interviewed Steven Sabados and Chris Hyndman, TV's original HGTV Designer Guys who now have a show called Steven and Chris on CBC television, a couple of years ago for another publication and their recommendation for folks contemplating redecoration was to think of your home as a luxurious hotel, make your all-the-time living space as lovely as a suite in any high-end accommodation, with plush fabrics, clean lines and fine accessories.

(Note: Sabados is a graduate of Fanshawe College's fine arts program.) This seems like good advice, because if we're willing to spend top dollar for a night or two of lovely accommodation, why not invest a proportionate amount in our own homes that we enjoy on a daily basis. But I don't think that you have to break the bank to do this; it's more a function of thinking outside the (dare I say it) box and invest a bit more where it counts, like really fine linens.

Leslee Squirrell, of Leslee Squirrell By Design, sees the recent drop in the stock exchange, coupled with a declining economy and perpetually rising gas prices, as a catalyst for people to be more guarded about how they spend money. She thinks that homeowners will revert to what they knew to be true as children and use classic pieces that have stood up well to time, like hardwood pieces. Her recommendation for wise home furnishing investment is simple: "Spend the most your budget allows on things that hold your body, like the couch, chairs or bed, and less on things that hold lamps or glassware (side tables and china cabinets), as they don't have to be of the same quality."

So if you combine these two philosophies, you'll have a beautiful home done in warmer, neutral wall colours, fitted with comfortable bedroom furniture, featuring soft lighting and excellent fabrics. It will be a clean organized space, inviting your family to relax.

Sound too good to be true? It is an attainable goal, and we will help you to find the retailers that will make this dream a reality for your own domicile in the third edition of Decor - Your Guide to Home Decorating and Furnishing. So sit back and read on for great tips from London's decorating and design experts.
